Technology is advancing quickly, and as a result, so are the jobs associated with it. There are plenty of opportunities for IT jobs in Ireland and abroad for those who are seeking them.
However, this doesn’t mean that if you are in this line of work, you won’t suffer from the same issues that everyone else has when it comes to getting a job in the sector. Additionally, issues can arise when advancing your career because you are deciding which route to pursue.
If you are in the middle of your career and you aren’t sure how you can progress without waiting around for a promotion, it can make you feel a bit trapped. However, there are steps you can take to ensure you are developing your skills and maximising chances for progression.
Gaining experience outside of your core area is a great way to improve your skill base and raise your profile. This can be by volunteering to work on projects in different areas of the business or by engaging with stakeholders that you aren’t normally exposed to.
Improving any skills outside of what your normal job covers will show your current or potential new employers that you take the initiative and you can leave your comfort zone. Not only this, but it also looks great on your CV!
With an ever-changing technological environment, it is also advisable that qualifications are maintained and kept up to date. You may have a Scrum Master qualification and may not necessarily use it on a daily basis, but you never know when it will help you to land that dream job.
Whether you improve your skill base through your organisation or gain qualifications and certificates outside of work, potential employers will see that you pay attention to the trends within the industry and are willing to go the extra distance to learn from them.
Speaking of trends, it is vital that you stay on top of them. This is not just for improving your skill base, but also for improving your knowledge of the sector, even in areas that don’t apply to your current role. You never know when knowledge of other areas may come in handy.
One way of improving your knowledge of other areas is to talk to people who work within that sector. Not only will you be gaining knowledge, but you may also help advance your career through networking. Meeting like-minded people and showcasing your skills may open up opportunities you hadn’t even thought of and could help to give you confidence for when the interview process comes around.
If you feel like you have achieved everything you can with your current employer and there are no more opportunities for progression, why not look for a change? Here at Eolas, we have a wide range of IT job vacancies in Ireland, and our team of consultants will be happy to help with any queries you may have, so why not look to make a change today?Previous Page
