SSAS, or Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services, is an online analytical and transactional processing (OLAP) and data mining tool in the Microsoft SQL Server.
SSAS is used to analyse and digest information that can be potentially spread across multiple databases, or in disparate tables or files. Microsoft has included many services in the SQL Server relating to data warehousing and Business Intelligence (BI). These services include Reporting, Analysis and Integration Services. Analysis Services includes a group of OLAP and data mining capabilities and comes in two variations; Multidimensional and Tabular.
Multidimensional analysis is an OLAP technique that produces the ability to analyse large quantities of data by storing data in axes and cells, rather than the traditional two-dimensional view in rows and columns. This then places predictive analytic capabilities in the hands of workers by creating an instant connection to backend data using familiar applications such as Microsoft Excel and SharePoint for analysis, visual presentation and collaboration. Data Analysts will be familiar with and will utilise this tool within their works.
