SCOM provides a monitoring and reporting tool that can watch various objects defined within the environment such as operating systems, hypervisors, applications, system services or server hardware. Objects are set up and configured for the particular environment as desired. From there, SCOM checks the health (performance and availability) of each object and alerts administrators to potential problems, with possible root causes or corrective actions offered that can help speed up troubleshooting.
SCOM uses the basic “traffic light” colour code to indicate health states. Green is healthy, yellow is a warning and red suggests a critical issue, and these health states can be configured for each object. For example, a disk drive can be set to report “healthy” with over 70% capacity remaining, “warning” with 70-80% capacity filled and “critical” with over 80% capacity filled. These reporting levels can be set to desired levels and changed when necessary.
