SAP stands for ‘Systems Applications and Products’ and was founded by five IBM employees in Germany in 1972. It was originally aimed to allow customers the ability to interact with a common database with an inclusive application range. More applications gradually began to be assembled, and SAP is used by leading companies such as IBM and Microsoft today.

The SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, or SAP ECC, is the collective term for SAP’s technical and functional modules that enable enterprises to manage business processes through a unified system. SAP ERP has a number of main modules which are separated into functional modules and technical modules, of which each has submodules.

Several professional IT roles will use SAP within their working lives, including Business Analysts and IT consultants.
