A Storage Area Network (SAN) is a high-speed network that has the
capability to provide access to consolidated block-level storage. The purpose
of a SAN is to enhance pre-existing storage networks.
This is often made possible by reorganising the resources that are already on the network in order for the storage to be locally attached. This allows several servers to all access shared storage.
One of the main benefits of SAN in businesses is easier storage administration. With the files being shared locally, people within the business can access their files from different locations. This means that there is less storage needed on the network server, so more powerful applications can be run.
