Requirements Gathering, also referred to as Requirements Elicitation, involves more than simply asking the customer what their needs are.
From asking what their initial specifications are, Business Analysts research requirements through the means of interviews, brainstorming and observation, in order to ensure that they have bridged the gap between the technical needs and the business wants.

Business Analyst to arrive at a clear result of what is needed in order for the project to be undertaken. Requirements gathering allows any areas of
uncertainty to be brought to light so that the business project’s process can run smoothly and efficiently.
