The Unix system is a group of multitasking, multi-user computer operating systems. The system has developed over time from its original form of the AT&T Unix that was created in the 1970s and continues to advance even to this day. For anyone in Unix Admin jobs, it is vital that they are up-to-date with modern processes of the system and have a thorough understanding that they are able to clearly communicate to others (i.e. clients) who will have little to no knowledge of the system.
Unix Admins will spend most their time completing routine tasks such as system checks, however, some time will be dedicated to troubleshooting challenging problems. It is therefore essential that Unix Admins are great problem-solvers that work well under pressure; they must have a thirst for knowledge and can implement these findings into their own work. When administering Unix systems, there will always be new things to learn, install and problems that arise, and always a client that needs help. The essential skills for Unix administration are software/application management, where employees must confidently be able to install, test and update the software on the system; in addition, Unix Admins must conduct account and user management where they will be responsible for talking and guiding clients, or other employees within the organisation, to use the system; this can also include adding or managing user access and privileges. The Unix Admins will also have to run backup checks, monitor and fine-tune the performance of the system, reboot and review log files. They may also be responsible for security management where they will implement firewalls and check security configurations.
