Programmers either possess a degree in computer science or have years of relevant experience in the industry, or ideally both. They may be asked to specialise in one area or be generalists who work on several systems and programs within an organisation.

The term Programmer can refer to a wide range of individuals, with distinct skill-sets, who work on different areas of programming; for this reason, many will define which area they specialise in such as Web Programmer. Programmers have a broad understanding of coding language that includes, but is not limited to, XML, HTML, PHP, Perl and SQL.

They are an essential part of the team in any technology industry because without coding, the program or system would not work correctly, and they will be needed to fix any issues that arise. Programmers are conscientious workers who are self-motivated but can also work well within teams.
