The term DevOps engineer may be applied to a variety of different professionals in different IT roles and as a result the specific responsibilities of a DevOps engineer can vary considerably.

The key responsibilities of the DevOps engineer role are likely to include:

What skills and qualifications does a DevOps engineer require?

A job as a DevOps engineer is a demanding and senior role, requiring several years of experience in IT operations and systems. There is no specific career path to become a DevOps engineer and it is quite normal to move into DevOps engineering with a background in software development or system administration.

A degree is not necessary to work as a DevOps engineer, but employers will give preference to those with Computer Science or Computer Science and Engineering degrees.
